Creating a Post

This page covers the post edit screen and goes through each of the available settings that are unique to this theme.

Creating a post is the first step towards adding content to your site. Aubrey not only makes full use of the WordPress block editor, but it also provides post settings too, allowing even more layout flexibility!

✏️ Create a New Post

To create a new post, navigate to Posts > Add New from your WordPress dashboard, or click on "Add new" if you're on the posts page.

This will take you to the post edit screen, where all the magic happens. If you're just starting to work with the block editor (also known as Gutenberg), then you might want to consider looking through the Official Handbook first.

😩 But I Prefer the Classic Editor!

Of course, the block editor is not for everyone. You can revert to using the classic editor if you wish to do so. There's even an Official Plugin specifically for this purpose. Simply navigate to Plugins > Add New from your WordPress dashboard and do a search for "classic editor".

🎛️ Post Settings

Each post comes with its own set of options, which are outlined below. These are unique to Aubrey so long as you have the Aubrey Plugin installed and activated. You'll find the options at the bottom of the post edit screen.

These featured images differ from the standard featured image that WordPress provides. These appear in different shapes and sizes so it allows you to display a cropped or alternate version of your featured image in things like sliders and banners. If these are left blank, then the original featured image will be used in these areas instead.

  • Slider Image - Upload an image to be used specifically for full-screen sliders. The ideal size for this should be 1920 x 960 pixels.

  • Wide Banner Image - Upload an image to be used specifically for wide post banners that appear in the post banners area of a page, if enabled. The ideal size for this should be 1920 x 640 pixels.

  • Tall Banner Image - Upload an image to be used specifically for tall post banners that appear in the post banners area of a page, if enabled. The ideal size for this should be 1280 x 1764 pixels.

🛠️ Post Layout Settings

These settings are used to give each of your posts a unique layout style. You can set default values for these in the customizer, but setting them here will override them for that particular post.

  • Header Layout - Choose a header layout for the current post. The following styles are available;

    • Default Customizer Setting - The value chosen in the Theme Options panel in the customizer will be used.

    • Classic - This is the classic narrow layout that you see on older websites.

    • Wide - This is a more modern layout that supports styles for wide and full-width blocks.

    • Full Width - This uses your featured image as a full-width background.

    • Full Screen - Similar to the above but also takes up the whole height of the viewport.

    • Split - Image/Title - The header will be split between the featured image then the post title.

    • Split - Title/Image - The header will be split between the post title then the featured image.

  • Use Customizer Color Overlay Setting? - Switch this on if you want to use the colour overlay setting that was set in the customizer.

  • Overlay Color - Choose an overlay colour to use over the featured image. The transparency value will determine how much of the image is visible. This setting is only available on Full-Width and Full-Screen header layouts, and if NOT using the customizer setting.

  • Sidebar Position - Choose a position for the sidebar, or disable it completely. By default, it will use whatever value was set in the customizer.

Tip: You can set default values for these in the Theme Options panel of the customizer. Values set in the customizer will be applied to all posts but can be overridden in individual posts.
