Creating a Navigation Menu

This page covers the process of creating and configuring navigation menus for your site, including a menu structure and assigning locations.

Creating navigation menus in WordPress is a simple process thanks to its intuitive drag and drop interface. If you've added the demo content to your site, there'll already be navigation menus set up. You can edit these to your needs or create an entirely new one.

To access the menus page, navigate to Appearance > Menus from your WordPress dashboard.

To add new menu items, tick the items you want to add from the left-hand column titled "Add menu items", then click "Add to Menu". These items will then show up at the bottom of your menu under the "Menu structure" column.

Note: By default, pages, posts, custom links, categories, tags, and formats should be available - but if any are missing or you want to enable any custom post types, click on Screen Options at the top to enable them.

Once added, you can then drag these around to position them where you want so you can create your own hierarchy and structure. Do this for as many menu items as you need.

Once a menu has been configured, you'll then need to save it. You can then assign your new menu to a location under "Menu Settings" at the bottom of the page.

You can also click on the "Manage Locations" tab at the top. Aubrey has six locations available to display navigation menus...

  • Primary Menu - This menu appears in the navigation bar at the top, and is your site's main navigation.

  • Minimal Menu - This also appears in the navigation bar when header layouts 7 or 8 are chosen.

  • Split Menu (Left/Right) - These two locations are used when header layout 10 is chosen. They appear on the left and right sides of your site's branding area.

  • Footer Menu - This is the small navigation menu that appears in your site's footer area at the very bottom of your site.

  • Off-Canvas Menu - This menu will appear in the off-canvas flyout menu and is mainly used for navigation on mobile and tablet displays.

Tip: You can assign the same menu in multiple locations. Just check the boxes of where you want it to appear!

Aubrey also provides some extra options for each menu item. You can see these when expanding one of the menu items in the "Menu structure" column.

Badges are used to display something unique about a menu item, such as "New!" or "Popular!". If these are set, they will be appended to a menu item. Badges are only displayed in the primary and off-canvas menus.

  • Badge Type - Choose from a dark or light style.

  • Badge Text - The text to use for the badge. Only plain text is allowed. It's recommended that this should only be a few letters.
